iPhone 4.0 to be Unveiled on March 14th?

An anonymous tipster has just dropped us a tip which reads “Apple will demo iPhone OS 4.0 on March 14th”. Digging for more info on this, we found out that Cult of Mac also received a similar a tip yesterday but since 14th March happens to be a Sunday, it is highly unlikely that Apple is going to demo or unveil their new OS on a Sunday morning.

Next iPhone OS to include video chat support?

Apple blog 9to5Mac has been doing some investigative work inside the the new iPhone SDK, and they’ve come up with a few interesting files. Located in TelephonyUI.framework are several resources that seem to indicate the inclusion of video chat functionality in future iPhones. Two PNG button files, one to accept a video call and one to reject it, and a call to these buttons in the TelephonyUI binary make excellent fodder for video chat rumors. Is Apple going to be including video chat in the next iPhone? We hope so… a front facing camera would also be appreciated.

iPhone 4G Concept: Super AMOLED Screen, Video Conferencing and Flash

Just came across this next-generation iPhone 4G concept image which shows off a Super AMOLED screen, a front-facing camera for video conferencing via iChat, and an LED Flashlight on the backside for the 5 megapixel camera. We all know how AMOLED screens produces crisp and vivid contrasts compared to the traditional LED displays on iPhones. The recently announced Samsung Wave has gone a step further by introducing Super AMOLED display technology which is an improved version of AMOLED, seen on the devices like Nexus One.

The difference between the traditional LED on iPhone 3GS vs AMOLED display on Nexus One can be seen in the image below.


You can clearly see how washed-out the iPhone 3GS display (on top) looks in comparison to the one on Nexus One.

Next iPad to have front facing video camera, next iPhone to have flash? (flash LED, not Adobe Flash)

Earlier this week Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) accidentally posted beta 3 of their iPhone OS 3.2 SDK. They took it off the site after just a few hours, but that didn’t stop hundreds, maybe even thousands, of developers from grabbing it. Inside this beta SDK are some files that reveal a few API calls into Apple’s private framework, most notable are “hasFrontCamera”, “supportsZoom”, and “hasFlash”. Also included in the SDK are some images of buttons (pictured below) a user would click on to either accept or decline a video call.

Put one and two together and it’s easy to predict that the next iPad will indeed have video calling capabilities, and that the next iPhone may have a camera that not only has a flash LED (maybe even Xenon?), but can also zoom. We’re just four months away until Apple’s WWDC, set to take place June 28th, when we’re likely to hear more about the successor to the iPhone 3GS. As for the next generation of the iPad, it’s impossible to predict anything right now. If the product is a hit, then they’ll refresh it early. If it’s a lame duck, then they’ll try and get rid of all the inventory in their factories and then take another stab at this “in between” product category.
