Startup airline Virgin America has decided to drop Flash in favor of HTML5 and iPhone support for its new website, according to The Register.

Chief Information Officer Ravi Simhambhatla told The Reg: "I don't want to cater to one hardware or one software platform one way to another, and Flash eliminates iPhone users. This year is going to be the year of the mobile [for Virgin]."

By the second half of 2010 Virgin plans to let passengers check in with their phones. Though still waiting for approval by the Transportation Security Administration, this system will issue passengers an electronic boarding pass which will be shown to security workers on your phone's screen.

Virgin plans to move its new site to HTML 5 once the standard has been ratified at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

As the iPhone and soon the iPad gain market share and popularity we may see more companies following suit. That would sure make Apple happy... :eyebrows:
