New iPhone Expected to Cost Less

Apple's new iPhone is expected to have a lower total cost of ownership and add new gesture based functionality.

Morgan Stanley research has found that the highest barrier to greater iPhone adoption is the cost of hardware, followed by the service plan.

Analyst Katy Huberty expects Apple to introduce a new model in June that will be economically friendly to even more consumers.

"We expect Apple to launch new iPhones in June that offer both a lower total cost of ownership and new functionality, potentially including gesture-based technology," she wrote.

Huberty is bullish on Apple's stock and optimistic about the iPad.

"We expect Apple to ship its first iPad and announce additional content deals in late March to better than expected demand," Huberty wrote. "We see the iPad targeting the sub-$800 consumer notebook market which equates to 30M annual units just in the US (120M globally)."

Apple Shareholder Meeting: 25 New China Stores

Fortune has posted some information about the Apple Shareholder Meeting sourced from texts sent secretly from inside the meeting.

The press was not allowed to bring communication devices into the event that began at 1 p.m. EST today.

Here are some select quotes...

12:59 Board now taking their seats [Al] Gore, [Andrea] Jung and [Bill] Campbell all in the house. Now Apple mgmt. [Steve] Jobs in the house kicking off the mtg

1:00: Jobs looks good!

1:27 Sustainability proposal voted down by shareholders. Steve back on stage with [COO] Tim Cook and [CFO] Peter Oppenheimer. Shareholder says very glad to have Jobs health and back! big applause! Jobs thanks Tim Cook for his stewardship

1:43 Twenty five Apple Stores planned for China [Ed note: This is material news.]

1:50 Steve answering vast majority of Qs … He is looking and sounding in fine form!

1:54 Steve is as feisty as ever (suggesting that questioners come to an actual question) and in good humor!

2:08 In response to more environmentalists' Qs, Jobs is very cogently and passionately defending Apple's environmental record. Another shareholder then asked a longwinded Q about what Apple/Jobs fears. "What keeps you awake at night?" … Jobs deadpans: "Shareholders meetings." Audience erupts in laughter ;)

2:12 iPhone exclusivity question (Verizon): No comment… Not even a hint

2:19 Meeting winding down. Jobs cracking jokes … In total charge of the meeting, now over

Gull1hack iPhone Jailbreak Tool is Fake by Design!

Gull1hack and Blacksn0w V2 by the Gull1hack team has now been confirmed as fake by the iPhone
Dev-Team. A Release Candidate version of Gull1hack was released the other day which was supposed to jailbreak all iPhone and iPod touch devices on the new bootrom untethered.
This is what the iPhone Dev-Team had to say about Gull1hack:
Don’t be fooled by gull1hack. It’s designed to say Transfer failed. Avoid trojans and viruses.

And this is the message you will get when you try and use this tool with your iPhone and iPod touch.

Stay away from all such tools as they could harm your phone or computer by running malicious code. Only redsn0w, sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool, ultrasn0w and blacksn0w are confirmed as working.

iPhone OS Coming to More Devices?

According to a recent job posting, the Cupertino based company is looking for a engineer to lead a group of software engineers in order to bring iPhone OS to new devices and platforms. The job description is as follows.

http://www.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/iPhoneOS.jpg

The Core Platform team within Apple’s Core OS organization is looking for a talented and inspired manager to lead a team focused on bring-up of iPhone OS on new platforms. The team is responsible for low level platform architecture, firmware, core drivers and bring-up of new hardware platforms. The team consists of talented engineers with experience in hardware, firmware, IOKit drivers, security and platform architecture.
This position requires a very technical and hands-on leader, experience in working closely with hardware team and a deep understanding of bare metal software. You must be a highly self-motivated individual who seeks to create a dynamic and creative team environment in which old problems are solved in new and innovative ways.

This may sound great to some but I highly doubt this “the new platforms bit” is ever going to happen given the way Apple and their eco-system works. If OS X isn’t allowed to run on any computer other than a Mac, then why would they allow iPhone OS? However what we may get to see is iPhone OS coming to more Apple-made devices like iPod touch and iPad.

Apple Applies for 'Magic TrackPad' Trademark

The US Patent and Trademark Office has published an Apple trademark application for the 'Magic TrackPad'.

Patently Apple notes that "while Apple's trademark filing only covers International Classification 009, it should be noted that Apple covers some very interesting elements under this classification, such as: Touchscreens, Light Pens and Graphics Tablets."

We don't know what exactly "Magic TrackPad" device is; however, John Gruber from Daring Fireball did mention hearing about a "Multi-Touch Trackpad Gadget for Desktop Macs" way back in October.

iPhone and iPad Experimentation App Laboratory

ModiFace, developers of automated virtual makeover tools that are currently used by nearly 50 websites, today announced the launch of the iLab--an iPhone and iPad application experimentation and development laboratory. The iLab, with a dedicated team of mobile researchers, engineers, and designers, will be launching several unique titles for the iPhone and upcoming iPad in the next few weeks.

"The structure that has worked so well for us for the regular ModiFace Labs--bringing together image-processing experts and online application engineers to research and develop new and innovative web applications--will now be applied for the iPhone and iPad devices through the iLab," said Parham Aarabi, ModiFace President and CEO.

The first two applications to be released by the iLab will be:

SKIN MATCH: Gone are the days of testing foundation colors in-store and leaving with an abundance of different-colored smudges all over your hands. With Skin Match, you can simply snap a photo of your skin, and it immediately suggests the closest foundation colors to your skin tone.

MAKEUP: Version 5.0 of the popular virtual makeover application will feature nearly 1000 real-life products that can be applied to a user's own photo, including eyeshadow, lipstick, blush, and foundation. User's can then purchase the products selected right on their iPhone, get more information about the products, or email and share their new looks with a single click.

"While we are excited about the launch of these new applications, we are most excited about what will come out in the next few months from the ModiFace iLab," says Nikkie Gatto, ModiFace Resident Beauty Expert, who will oversee the development of the iLab's upcoming titles.

ModiFace currently has several titles available for purchase from the iTunes App Store, including MakeUp, Face Dance, and Beauty Friends Forever. Future versions of these applications are currently under development at the iLab.

62 Workers Poisoned at Apple Supplier

62 workers, 15 more than initially reported, have fallen ill after toxic chemical exposure at Wintek’s Suzhou, China-based factory, according to a Global Post report.

Among the factory employees sickened, 41 are still hospitalized, said Huang Zhongjie, a spokesman for Wintek in Taiwan.

Workers at the factory suffered nerve and muscle damage after working with the toxic chemical hexane to clean component touch screens for electronic products. The company and local government both say Wintek’s factory has since stopped using the chemical in its manufacturing process. Several media outlets, including the official China Daily newspaper in Beijing, have reported the factory makes screens for Apple’s new iPad tablet computer, but a factory manager said Thursday he could not confirm that. Workers were uncertain about the ultimate destination of the LCD screens they made.

Apple did not reply to GlobalPost’s requests for comment; however, they did just release an extensive report on supplier responsibility in which they address how the company is committed to ensuring the highest standards of social responsibility from their suppliers.

Apple found that 75 percent of the 100 plus suppliers it audited were in compliance with health and safety codes. They did not name the specific companies that failed to meet standards.

Steve Jobs Personally Called Winner of iTunes Contest

Steve Jobs personally called the winner of the 10 Billion Song Downloads contest to let him know he had won the contest and would be receiving a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

According to RollingStone, Louie Sulcer from Woodstock, Georgia thought he was bring pranked.

“He called me and said, ‘This is Steve Jobs from Apple.’ I said, ‘Yeah right,’ ” Sulcer tells Rolling Stone. “I have a son that loves to play tricks and he does that every now and then — calls me and imitates somebody.” After three or four times of asking “Come on now, who is this,” Sulcer realized that his caller ID read simply “Apple,” and only then did he believe that Jobs was on the line.

Sulcer's winning download was Johnny Cash’s “Guess Things Happen That Way.” He downloaded the song for a mix of Cash songs he was making for his son. Completely unaware of Apple's contest and having never heard the song before, listened to iTunes’ 30-second preview and bought the track. “I really liked it. It had some really good pickin’ in it. So that’s how I got to that song,” Sulcer says.

With $10,000 to spend I'm sure he will be able to make a lot more mixes in the future.
