Major Carriers Collaborate to Launch New App Store Rival
A dozen of the world's leading mobile phone operators have formed an alliance to rival the App Store, according to a Times Online report.
Orange, Telefonica, AT&T and nine others are set to announce an open technology platform designed to deliver applications to mobile phone users.
The announcement will be made tomorrow at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and is said to have support from Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and LG.
The Times says Vodafone has yet to commit to the new alliance. It is collaboring with Verizon Wireless, China Mobile and Softbank of Japan to create a common technology standard.
